Phase 2 includes:
The newly established Applied Materials Professorship aims to attract leading experts in semiconductors, materials science, and technology to advance academic research and innovation in these critical fields.
The purpose of the Corporate Lab is to accelerate the discovery of new materials for semiconductor manufacturing and to translate these innovations into commercial applications. It also fosters collaboration in research and talent development, particularly in microelectronics and advanced materials. To meet an ever demanding technology performance in the IOT era, new advanced materials, advanced material systems and complex material engineering are essential to the future development of the semiconductor industry. Hence, for the continuous innovation of advanced materials, an integrated development of chemistry, process and equipment has become imperative.
The collaboration introduces new educational and training opportunities for undergraduates, postgraduates, and professionals, equipping them with skills in microelectronics, advanced materials, and process engineering.
Phase 2 of the Applied Materials-NUS Advanced Materials Corporate Lab was launched by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, who is also the Chairman of the National Research Foundation (NRF).
The Applied Materials-NUS Advanced Materials Corporate Lab combines Applied Materials’ leading expertise in materials engineering and semiconductor technologies with NUS’ world-class and multi-disciplinary R&D capabilities that span applied chemistry, materials science and microelectronics process engineering.
The collaboration will focus on R&D in advanced materials engineering with the intent to create innovations that can be quickly transferred into commercial applications.
Since 2018, the lab has developed several patented innovations in chemistry, semiconductor processes, and hardware design. It has also sponsored scholarships and facilitated the scale-up of research into real-world applications.
Supported under the Research, Innovation, and Enterprise 2025 (RIE2025) plan, the collaboration strengthens Singapore’s position as a global hub for semiconductor research, aligns with the country’s economic growth strategy, and enhances its talent pipeline.
The collaboration aligns with Applied Materials’ “Singapore 2030” plan by enhancing the country’s R&D capabilities, strengthening manufacturing capacity, building partnerships within the technology ecosystem, and fostering workforce development.
The lab is hosted at NUS’s College of Design and Engineering and Faculty of Science, leveraging multi-disciplinary expertise in applied chemistry, materials science, and microelectronics process engineering.
